Driving In The Ice & Snow

Young Driver Guides From iKube Insurance

Young driver advice - How to drive in the snow and ice.

When you’re learning to drive or have recently passed your test, driving in normal conditions can be a stressful time until you have gained valuable driving experience. Young drivers face greater challenges in conditions such as those we are experiencing across Britain at the moment. Cold, ice and snow can make driving even more hazardous.

Below are some handy hints to try and make your journey as safe and stress free as possible.

  • Make time to prepare your car. Get up 10 minutes earlier than normal to ensure you have de-iced your car properly. Don’t rush. Leave plenty of time to get to your destination.
  • Check the roof for snow before you drive - it can slip down over the windscreen and obscure your view.
  • Be sure to clear all windows of snow and ice using de-icer and a scraper - do not cut corners and set off with just a tiny hole cleared in the windscreen.
  • When driving, do not use your windscreen washers until your windscreen is warm and dry. Any water that hits a cold windscreen may freeze on impact and severely restrict your driving.
  • If you have a cigarette lighter to hand, use it to warm a key for a frozen lock. Don't breathe on the lock, as the moisture will condense and freeze.
  • In case you get stranded, it's worth carrying a mobile phone with fully charged battery, torch, first-aid kit, tow rope, blankets, warm coat and boots, jump leads, snow shovel, warning triangle, an old sack or rug and water repellent spray. This may seem over the top – but you’ll be glad of it if you get stuck or stranded.
  • If possible, try to plan your route using main roads – not small country lanes etc. Main roads have a better chance of being gritted.
