Garage Labour Rates Hit Record High
September 19, 2012
Young drivers are facing increasing motoring costs - including record high garage labour rates of £82.86 an hour, according to Warranty Direct.
The company released figures that show annual labour rates increased by 3% - a reported 10% higher than it was two years ago.
With other costs to contend with - such as young driver insurance, road tax and fuel prices motorists are coming under increasing financial pressure.
The research released by Warranty Direct indicates that small, independently run garages appear to have seen the most significant annual increase at 6%.
Other figures show that Surrey is the most expensive area for labour rates - with hourly prices just short of £100. However, Powys in Wales is said to be the cheapest - with an average of £58.46.
A spokesperson for the firm commented:
“Price hikes continue apace in 2012 and we are now at the point that a simple breakdown could cost an eye watering sum to put right. Some older cars could even be written off by a relatively straightforward mechanical hiccup.”
Mr McClure Fisher added that "With the cost of petrol and diesel still rocketing, the latest stats will come as a bit of a blow to those expecting rates to have stabilised."
The Managing Director of Motor Codes, Chris Mason has advised consumers to ask for rates in advance and ensure that it is itemised on the invoice so they can see what they're being charged for.
