Instructors Urge for Cycle Safety to Be Part of Test
September 10, 2012

Driving instructors are calling for cycle safety to be included as a mandatory part of the practical driving test.
This news has come following recent figures that show the number of cyclists injured or killed on the road rose by 13% in the first quarter of 2012.
Following the amazing success of Team GB's cyclists in the 2012 Olympics there is a fear that more and more novice cyclists will take to the streets - increasing the risk of further casualties.
As a result driving instructors are calling on the Government to do more to protect the ever growing number of cyclists.
As many as 75% of instructors believe that learner driver insurance holders should have to undertake a mandatory module in cycle awareness in the driving test.
Following this, Martin Gibbs - the British Cycling Policy and Legal Affair Director backed the move stating:
“We want to see learner drivers educated to see cyclists as legitimate road users who have a right to be treated with respect and consideration. We are also calling for drivers to learn safe overtaking manoeuvres.”
