Cloned car warning for new drivers
19 Jan 2012

Teenagers who have just passed their test have been warned they should make avoiding buying a cloned car as big a priority as securing cheap car insurance for young drivers.
HPI has warned that many buyers are still being caught out by cloned cars, with fraudsters using more and more sophisticated methods during the economic downturn.
Officials at the group have offered simple steps for motorists to avoid used car criminals, including inspecting the vehicle at the registered owner's address as shown on the logbook, which should always be inspected to check out its history.
Consumers should never pay a large amount by cash and should be aware of the vehicle's market value - if you are being asked to pay 70% or less of the car's worth, be on your guard.
HPI consumer director Kristian Welsh said: "Whilst we believe awareness of car of cloning has grown, many buyers still choose to ignore the warning signs because their heart tells them it's a dream buy."
